Job description:

A small dairy located in Ohio is searching for a reliable Herdsman with a strong work ethic. Employer prefers someone with herd health and breeding experience. Will be responsible for scraping barns, bedding cows, sort cows, and take care of calves. Must be able to complete daily chores in a timely manner. Robotic milking and maintenance experience is a plus, but not required to be considered for position. There is some field work responsibilities with the position. The employer is looking for someone who is capable of managing the dairy if they away. There is opportunity for the candidate to house cattle and build equity as they work. This is a possible buy in position.
Responsibilities
(No one area would eliminate a candidate, but candidate must show willingness to learn these skills)
- Check reports from robotic milker and understand basic udder health and the function of the milking system
- Feed calves, train calves to robotic calf feeder and understand feeding of calf and able to identify calf illness.
- Drive Case skid steer safely and efficiently.
- Be able to read ration and run feeding system. Feed all animals correct ration.
- Understand basic animal husbandry skills and display competency in animal husbandry.
- Identify and assist cows calving
- Newborn calf care
- Identify mastitis and treat
- Identify metabolic disease
- Treat with IV or syringe
- Dry off and vaccinate cows
- Grease equipment, oil change and assist in maintenance of all equipment
- Breed cows
- Lift 50 #
- Climb silo
- Be willing to learn new skills and assist with field preparation and harvest.
- Be able to embrace new technology, read computer work sheets and interpret data from computer systems.
