About the area
The Tax Avoidance Taskforce sits in the Client Engagement Group of the ATO. It plays a key
role in ensuring multinational enterprises, large public and private businesses (and associated
individuals) pay the right amount of tax in Australia.
The Wealth Program and the Promoters and Tax Exploitation teams are part of the Tax
Avoidance Taskforce within the Integrated Compliance business line. Integrated Compliance
business line in CEG has a specific focus on delivering holistic solutions to counter deliberate,
systemic or complex behavioural issues that pose the biggest threats to the integrity of the tax
and superannuation systems.
The Wealth Program team investigates or audits private groups that engage in complex tax
avoidance behaviours and implements solutions to ensure compliance with tax obligations so
that the right amount of tax is paid in Australia. While the teams default position is to co-
operatively resolve issues, we have specialist expertise in escalating enforcement responses
including co-ordinating actions with domestic and international partner agencies to counter
obstructive behaviours adopted by the taxpayers.
The Promoters and Tax Exploitation team focuses on tax advisors and intermediaries that
promote and enable tax exploitation for their clients which can be public or private groups. The
team detects, investigates, and disrupts promoters of tax exploitation to prevent future harm to
the tax and superannuation system. It also has a key role in preventing the proliferation of
promoted tax exploitation by raising public awareness of the consequences of engaging in
high-risk tax exploitation schemes.
